The Vectorial® modular system for erecting barrier-free stopping points easily and inexpensively

Sustainability at the push of a button – a socially, ecologically and economically interesting solution for disabled-accessible stopping points

The Vectorial® system from ZICLA is a sustainable all-round solution that enables the quick, easy and inexpensive transformation of any stop into barrier-free platforms that are fully compliant with the Disability Equality Act (BehiG). The Vectorial® system also offers additional appealing utilisation possibilities outside of stations and stopping points.

You can find out more here about possible applications in the area of stopping point infrastructure.

The Vectorial® system – a social solution

The Vectorial® system helps you to support inclusion and assist people with disabilities.

The autonomous use and enjoyment of public transport by people with disabilities is a concern for society as a whole and an important component of efforts to include as many people as possible in the day-to-day of public life.

The disabled-friendly modification of all stopping point infrastructures as required by the Disability Equality Act (BehiG) poses a challenge for municipalities and transport companies alike. By the end of 2023, all stops must ensure barrier-free access to public transport or must offer alternative solutions for people with mobility disabilities.

Accessible stops are to the advantage of everyone. Seniors, parents with prams as well as travellers with luggage all also benefit from barrier-free access to public transport.

The Vectorial® system is cost-effective

The Vectorial® system is the clever and cost-effective interim solution for all stops where conversion to barrier-free systems is not possible by the end of 2023. With the modular building block system for stopping points, an existing stop can be quickly and easily converted into a temporary BehiG-compliant stop – at low effort and expense.

Using this approach, municipalities can save on expensive replacement solutions or unsightly temporary “alternatives”.

Many municipalities are struggling to upgrade all of their platforms to barrier-free by the end of 2023. There are many reasons, one being the fact that the stipulated dimensions of barrier-free stops require more space. This is not always straightforwardly available in the public sphere and must first be procured by public authorities, or planning of street space must be more accommodating or far-sighted. In turn, this brings challenges in budgeting and funding, as well as in planning and implementation timelines.

The installation of custom board elements optimised for the barrier-free accessibility of stopping points is comparatively expensive. Modifications to the road course are also often necessary. Construction costs frequently amount to tens of thousands of Swiss francs for each upgraded stop.

The Vectorial® system – an ecological choice

The Vectorial® system is based on material reutilisation, repair, reprocessing and recycling. Exclusively recycled materials are used in the manufacture of the modular elements.

These can be dismantled straightforwardly and without damage before being reused elsewhere or returned to the cycle without restriction at the end of their service life.

On the one hand, the replacement solutions and other “alternatives” stipulated by the BehiG cost a great deal but are not sustainable, primarily for ecological reasons. Temporary stopping points made of concrete elements are laborious and energy intensive to install and the use of cobbled-together stopping points made of wood is non-optimal from an ecological perspective. Due to pollutants, some of the wood used in the road context cannot be easily disposed of and must be sent to special landfill. Passenger transport for single trips (alternative transport solution for the disabled) is likewise not resource-saving.

Use Case I: Parklet

Temporarily vacate a parking space and replace it with a parklet.
The result: a miniature park or plaza. Using the elements of the Vectorial® system, it is possible to configure seating,
parasols, tables, bike racks and many other features. Configure the public space exactly as you wish.

Detailed overview of the vectorial® system

  • Flexibility
Thanks to clever modular building block logic, the system can be utilised at practically any stopping point. It is available in various heights and is easily adaptable to the available space. Solutions are available for stopping points from a level of 0cm to approx. 16cm.
  • Versatility
Combinations of the stopping point with bicycle paths, pavements, pedestrian crossings and other facilities are easy to implement. The attachment or flush integration of waiting shelters, signposting, bollards, traffic lights, benches and more is also possible. The elements are available in different structures and colours, permitting the use of custom solutions.
  • Safety
Weatherproof, abrasion-resistant, impact-resistant and resilient. The anti-slip surface allows rainwater to run off. Reflective strips on the sides ensure visibility day and night and increase passenger safety.
  • Simplicity
Quick and easy assembly. Minimal intervention in the surface covering (boreholes in top layer).
  • Disabled-accessible
Fully disabled-accessible (measurements conform to European standards).

  • Cost-effective
Competitively priced compared to permanent end even makeshift solutions.
  • Ecology
The minimal ecological footprint of the modules, which are manufactured from recycled plastic, is a standout feature. At the end of its service life it can return to the material cycle.
